Medical grade epoxy is a general term used to describe non-toxic epoxy systems. While most epoxies are non-toxic is important to distinguish between use inside the body (in vivo) and outside the body (ex vivo). USP Class VI and ISO 10993 are certifications that involve in vivo tests in the classification of plastics. While these certifications should not be the only factor in determining a medical grade epoxy,many medical device manufacturers use these certifications as good indicators that the material is usable in medical applications.
EB-177 is a USP Class VI certified epoxy adhesive and encapsulant. Used in a variety of medical and optical applications, EB-177 is a convenient 1:1 mix ratio and high temperature epoxy. Used in the medical industry for PZT lamination and as a matching layer for ultrasound transducers, EB-177 is a non-toxic and non-hazardous epoxy. It is also used in large potting applications for the electronics industry including potting small transformers and capacitors.
